Why Tanzania
Bigger, wilder and less crowded than the country to its north.
The Serengeti is roughly ten times the size of the Maasai Mara. That scale is the point: you can drive for an hour without meeting another vehicle.
The northern circuit runs west from Arusha through four parks that get progressively more remarkable. Lake Manyara compresses groundwater forest, woodland and alkaline lake into a narrow strip below the Rift wall. Tarangire is baobab country with a river that draws the region's heaviest dry-season elephant concentrations. Then the road climbs over the Ngorongoro highlands and the Serengeti opens out.
Ngorongoro has no equivalent anywhere. An intact volcanic caldera with permanent water and grazing holds a resident population on its floor year-round, including black rhino. A single day there regularly produces more than three days elsewhere.
Tanzania also has deeper lodge quality at the top end. Kubu Kubu in the Serengeti, The Manor at Ngorongoro, Gibb's Farm and Lemala Mpingo Ridge are properties that change a trip rather than just housing it.

Best time to visit
When to go to Tanzania.
The migration is in the Serengeti all year — what changes is where. That makes month choice more consequential here than in Kenya.
- December – MarchCalving season on the southern short-grass plains, with very heavy predator activity. Green, and quieter than the mid-year peak.
- June – JulyHerds move north and west. Grumeti river crossings are possible. Dry, with good road conditions throughout.
- August – OctoberNorthern Serengeti and the Mara river crossings when conditions allow. Peak season for rates and camp availability.
- April – MayLong rains. Green, very quiet and cheapest. Some camps close and the Ngorongoro rim is often in cloud.
The Great Migration
The Serengeti holds it all year.
Unlike the Maasai Mara, where the herds are seasonal visitors, the Serengeti is where the migration lives. Roughly 1.3 million wildebeest and several hundred thousand zebra move on a loop driven by rainfall, calving on the southern plains around February and crossing north through the middle of the year.
That means there is no wrong month, only a right area for each month. We place you in the southern plains, at Seronera or in the north depending on when you travel — and we will tell you honestly what the current season is doing rather than promising a river crossing.

Safari and beach
Adding Zanzibar.
Zanzibar is a short flight from Arusha or from an airstrip in the Serengeti, which makes it the natural second half of a Tanzanian trip. Stone Town, then three or four nights on the east or north coast, is the shape most travellers take.
Beach extensions are not part of the current catalogue routes, so we quote them as a tailor-made addition. The drier coastal months broadly track the inland dry seasons, with a short rainy spell in April and May.
On the ground

Cross-border routes travel via Namanga toward Arusha. The guide and vehicle arrangements for both countries are confirmed with your final quotation; road safari travel uses a 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser.
On Tanzania-only trips, the whole circuit runs from Arusha with a Tanzanian driver-guide. Park permits for Ngorongoro are time-limited by the conservation authority, and we build the descent window into the itinerary rather than hoping for it on the day.

- EntryMost nationalities need a visa, applied for online in advance or issued on arrival. Check your own government's current guidance as well as Tanzania's.
- HealthSpeak to a travel clinic well before travelling. Yellow fever certification is required in some circumstances depending on your route.
- Getting aroundRoad transfers from Arusha are standard. Scheduled light aircraft to Serengeti airstrips are available at extra cost and save most of a day each way.
- AltitudeThe Ngorongoro rim sits above 2,200 m and is genuinely cold after dark. Pack a warm layer even in the dry season.
- Plastic bagsSingle-use plastic bags are banned and the ban is enforced at the airport. Use packing cubes or dry bags.

Why do some Tanzania packages show On Request instead of a price?
Several of our current Tanzania pages repeat the same base figure across different durations, which is not a safe basis for a quotation. We are reconfirming those rates and pricing each Tanzania enquiry against your actual dates, park fees and camps in the meantime.
How long do you get on the Ngorongoro Crater floor?
Access is time-limited by the conservation authority. Most itineraries plan a half-day descent. A full-day permit is available on some departures and is priced separately.
Is the Serengeti better than the Maasai Mara?
They are one ecosystem seen from two sides. The Serengeti is far larger and feels wilder; the Maasai Mara is more concentrated and easier to reach. If you have five days or more and want scale, choose the Serengeti.
Where in the Serengeti should I stay?
It depends on the month. The southern plains suit December to March, the central Seronera area works all year, and the north suits August to October. We place you where the wildlife is likely to be for your dates.
What is the budget camping option actually like?
Seronera Camp and Simba Campsite are authentic low-cost wilderness options with basic shared facilities. We sell them as basic camping, because that is what they are. The midrange tier uses tented lodges instead.
Can I climb Kilimanjaro on the same trip?
